THE ESALA PERAHERA

Esala Perahara

The Esala Perahera in Kandy is celebrated to honour the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. This ritual is performed by carrying the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha through the streets of the Kandy city with ten day long pageant of traditional culture events. Including Tuskers, Elephants, Traditional Dancers, Banners, Palanquins, Fire-juggling acrobats, Whip crackers and many more decorated people with different skills.

It’s event happened every year since abut 300AD. People do every year to get blessing from gods for rain, fertility, successful crops and good health.

First five nights of the Esala Perahera called “ KUMBAL PERAHERA” and next five is called “RANDOLI PERAHERA”. Randoli refers to palanquins on which the Queens of the ruling Kings traditionally traveled in the past.

The Festival of the ESALA PERAHERA is a festival held in July and August.
